India added 25.2 GW of solar capacity in calendar year 2024, representing a 204% increase compared to 8.3 GW added in 2023. This marks the highest annual capacity addition in the country's history, according to Mercom India's Q4 and Annual 2024 Solar Market Update Report.
Sectoral Breakdown
Large-scale solar projects accounted for over 87% of total capacity additions at 22 GW, while rooftop solar contributed the remaining 13% at 3.2 GW. By end of 2024, India's total installed solar capacity stood at 98.7 GW, with large-scale solar making up 86% and rooftop installations contributing 14%.
Leading States
Rajasthan, Gujarat, and Maharashtra led the expansion, accounting for approximately 32%, 27%, and 8% of total capacity additions respectively. Q4 2024 alone saw 7.8 GW installed, up 118% from Q3 2024 and 303% increase from Q4 2023.
Pipeline Growth
India's large-scale solar project pipeline stood at 177.5 GW, with additional 141.9 GW tendered and awaiting auction by year end. The year witnessed record 79.3 GW of tenders, up 39% from 2023's 57 GW.
